⇒Understanding Memory Processes

Memory is learning process that has persisted over time. It is our ability to store and retrieve information.

Learning involves a permanent change in knowledge and/ or behaviour.
*Study methods and materials will improve retention and recall of information, and enhance your learning experience.
  • The effectiveness influenced by your own unique learning style
  • Some students retain and recall information best through visual (spacial) learning, while others are aural (auditory) learners. To maximize the effectiveness of your studying discover your learning style
We Remember
  1. 10% of what we read
  2. 20% of what we hear
  3. 30% of what we see
  4. 50% of what we see and hear
  5. 70% of what we say
  6. 90% of what we say and do

Memory Systems

øSensory Memory (SM):

-Very temporary storage of information we recieve from our senses

øShort-Term Memory (STM):

-Limited period of time and limited capacity

-Working memory (holds memory we are currently processing)

øLong-Term Memory (LTM):

-Can retain information for a long period of time

-Elaboration rehearsal is required :- process involves thingking about a stimulus and relating it to information already in memory

How to Remember Better: ACTIVE RECALL
  1. New information enters your brain. It gets stored  in the working  memory for only a few seconds.
  2. From the working memory it moves to the short-term memory
  3. From short-term memory if it is recalled enough times it moves to long-term memory.

Activity 2

We all participated in this activity. It is really fun. I used N017 as my username in this game. I was in the 136th place. I only scored 908 points.

Mnemonics
  • Are methods for remembering information that is otherwise quite difficult to recall
  • A word or a sentence which is intended to be easier to remember than the thing it stands for
Mnemonic Devices
  • Rhymes and song – make a rhyme or a song of the facts                                      example: Alphabet (Twinkle,Twinkle little Star)
  • Loci systems – creates visual associations with familiar locations. It can also help you remember things in a particular order
  • Peg systems – employs key words represented by numbers                                                 example: 1=bun, 2=shoe, 3=tree, 4=door
Causes of Poor Concentration
  • Vocabulary difficulties
  • Conseptual difficulties
  • Inappropriate reading speed
  • Distraction
  • Poor organisation
  • Lack of interest
  • Lack of motivation
