⇒Understanding Memory Processes
Memory is learning process that has persisted over time. It is our ability to store and retrieve information.
Learning Pyramid

Learning involves a permanent change in knowledge and/ or behaviour.*Study methods and materials will improve retention and recall of information, and enhance your learning experience.
- The effectiveness influenced by your own unique learning style
- Some students retain and recall information best through visual (spacial) learning, while others are aural (auditory) learners. To maximize the effectiveness of your studying discover your learning style
We Remember
- 10% of what we read
- 20% of what we hear
- 30% of what we see
- 50% of what we see and hear
- 70% of what we say
- 90% of what we say and do
Human Brain
Humans do not only use 10% of their brain. The whole brain has a scientifically recognized function.
Left and Right Brain Function

⇒Which Brain You Have?
You have a male brain if you- Like to make to-do list
- Answer honestly when asked ‘does my bum look big in this?’
- Prefer to read non-fiction
- Notice grammatical errors
- Find maps easy to read
- Find it easy to chat to someone you have just met
- Can sense when you are intruding
- Lack interest in the technical details of a new computer, camera or other gadget
- Focus on beauty and painting rather than artists’ technique
- Have little interest in the dates of key historical events

Relationship Brain & Memory
- Analogy such as computer
- A computer is composed of components in the same way that the body or computer function.

Memory Systems
øSensory Memory (SM):
-Very temporary storage of information we recieve from our senses
øShort-Term Memory (STM):
-Limited period of time and limited capacity
-Working memory (holds memory we are currently processing)
øLong-Term Memory (LTM):
-Can retain information for a long period of time
-Elaboration rehearsal is required :- process involves thingking about a stimulus and relating it to information already in memory
How to Remember Better: ACTIVE RECALL
- New information enters your brain. It gets stored in the working memory for only a few seconds.
- From the working memory it moves to the short-term memory
- From short-term memory if it is recalled enough times it moves to long-term memory.
Activity 2
We all participated in this activity. It is really fun. I used N017 as my username in this game. I was in the 136th place. I only scored 908 points.3 steps before starting the activity:
-search https://kahoot.it
-enter the pin number (1625564)
-the activity starts.
Why We Forget What We Learn?
Students forget 90% of what they learn in class within 30 days. The
majority of this forgetting occurs within the first few hours after
class.
Mnemonics
- Are methods for remembering information that is otherwise quite difficult to recall
- A word or a sentence which is intended to be easier to remember than the thing it stands for
Mnemonic Devices
- Rhymes and song – make a rhyme or a song of the facts example: Alphabet (Twinkle,Twinkle little Star)
- Loci systems – creates visual associations with familiar locations. It can also help you remember things in a particular order
- Peg systems – employs key words represented by numbers example: 1=bun, 2=shoe, 3=tree, 4=door
Causes of Poor Concentration
- Vocabulary difficulties
- Conseptual difficulties
- Inappropriate reading speed
- Distraction
- Poor organisation
- Lack of interest
- Lack of motivation
Average Concentration Span By Age
Age                                   Average Concentration Span4 ⇔ 8-20 minutes
5 ⇔ 10-25 minutes
6 ⇔ 12-30 minutes
7 ⇔ 14-35 minutes
8 ⇔ 16-40 minutes
9 ⇔ 18-45 minutes
10 ⇔ 20-50 minutes
11 ⇔ 22-55 minutes
12 ⇔ 24-60 minutes
Improving Concentration
1.Phone- put it on silent (not vibrate)
- place it out of reach
- check it no more than once every hour
- clean/organise your desk
- make your bed every morning
- want to be organized in studies? take care of your room first
- go to the library
- there are too many distractions @ name
- people will talk to you @ name
- if you are colour coding, use up to 3 colours
- the rest will distract you and create unnecessary stress
3 Powerful Brain Hacks to Help You Focus In Class
- Your brain doesn’t pay attention to details ⇒ Do your class preparation
- Your brain can’t multitask ⇒ Remove all distractions
- We tend to lose focus after 10 minutes ⇒ Engage in class and think actively
How to Remember What You Wrote In Class
- Listen actively – write in your own words, connect to what you already know
- Pay attention and ask question if something is unclear
- Review your notes in the evening & quiz yourself (use active recall)
- Study a little every weekend ⇒ better to study a bit more often than pull allnighters

Activity 5

SQ3R How to Be An Effective Reader
S- Survey ⇒ scan the text and identify its structureQ- Query ⇒ ask yourself about each section
R- Review ⇒ read important sections again slowly. remember why are you trending
R- Recall ⇒ look back at your query questions
R- Read ⇒ read the whole text quickly. don’t stop. even if there is something difficult that you don’t understand
How to Improve Focus and Concentration
What is focus?
- to concentrate one thing and ignore many other things (at least temporarily)
I can’t focus
- it’s because we often have trouble with deciding what to focus
- we can’t concentrate on two tasks at once
- when we switch our focus from one task to another we waste our mental energy & time
How to choose what to focus
- write down 25 goals
- choose top 5 goals
- focus on top 5 list
- the rest is ”avoid at-all-cost list”
Increase attention span
- measure your progress
- feedback
- judgment
- focus on the process
Hacks to improve concentration
- Choose an ”anchor” task
- manage your energy
- check e-mail later
- keep your phone away from you (while focusing)
- work in full screen mode
- remove tasks that could distract from focus
